WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration on Wednesday plans to name a top White House aide as the director of the newly established safety institute for artificial intelligence, according to an administration official who insisted on anonymity to discuss the position. Elizabeth Kelly will lead the AI Safety Institute at the National Institute for Standards and Technology, which is part of the Commerce Department. Currently an economic policy adviser for President Joe Biden, Kelly played an integral role in drafting the executive order signed at the end of October that established the institute, the administration official said. The administration considers the safety tests as necessary to unlock the benefits of the rapidly moving technology, creating a level of trust that will allow for wider adoption of AI. But so far, those tests lack the universal set of standards that the institute plans to finalize this summer.

Snyder also is the eighth person to have a Flint water case thrown out after the Supreme Court’s unanimous June opinion. “The charges against (Snyder) were not properly brought and must be dismissed at this time,” Behm wrote. Snyder acknowledged that state government had botched the water switch, especially regulators who didn’t require certain treatments. State prosecutors, however, chose that path in the Flint water saga to hear evidence in secret and get indictments against Snyder and others.

Dec 9 (Reuters) - A Michigan judge has dismissed charges against former Governor Rick Snyder in connection with the Flint water crisis, his attorney said on Friday, several months after the state Supreme Court ruled that grand jury indictments returned in the case were invalid. Genesee Circuit Judge F. Kay Behm dismissed the case against Snyder, his attorney Brian Lennon said in an email to Reuters. Snyder was governor in 2014, when under state-appointed managers the government of Flint, a majority-Black city, switched its water supply from Lake Huron to the Flint River to cut costs. But in October, a judge threw out the indictments against seven of the officials, ruling them invalid due to a procedural error. The decision stemmed from a June ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court that "one-person grand juries" do not have authority to bring indictments, Judge Elizabeth Kelly of the 7th Judicial Circuit Court said in dismissing the charges, though they have power to subpoena witnesses and issue warrants.
